Just had our Spring Bank Holiday Fly-in Weekend up at Sutton Bank, Longhorsley, near to Wingates. On the Saturday Evening we had a Bar-B-Que, followed by a Toast and cake cutting to celebrate 25 years since our Flying Club was formed. The cake was cut by Doug Bertram who is our oldest Member.
Following on we had a great night of music from Roly Veitch playing and singing his Geordie songs, and he also gave us some interesting background to all of these songs. It was a tremendous musical evening and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Roly presents the music in his own inimitable, laid-back manner. He even accommodated a jazz request and played a nice riff on the Parlour acoustic he used for the Geordie songs.
Thanks, Roly, for a great evening – much appreciated.

Hi Roly, your CD arrived a couple of days ago and I've been playing it with much pleasure. Thank you for your kindness in sending it.
It was so wonderful to hear 'The Cliffs of Old Tynemouth' put to music - I must admit that I programmed that song from the CD and put it on repeat.
I wonder what David Lietch would have thought about his 3x gt niece listening to his song almost 170 years after he wrote it!
Yesterday my husband and I went for a drive around a nearby bay and I noticed in one small community area that the surname Veitch occurred, including a Veitch Road. I couldn't help but think of you and wonder if the Newfoundland Veitches may have originally come from the northern part of England.
Again Roly, thank you so much for sending me your 'Geordie Roots' CD. I am enjoying it a great deal!
Kind regards.

Dear Roly, just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed your set at the Queens Hotel on Saturday 9th May 2009 at the Keswick Jazz Festival. The Swing City Trio is a fine group and I look forward to hearing the band again.
Enrico Tomasso is probably the finest trumpet player in the UK and he fitted in marvellously with the trio as a guest and obviously enjoyed working with you all which is a great tribute to quality of the musicianship of the trio. He was generous with his praise and you could see the sincerity of his words. I'm sure you will long remember that session at the Queens Hotel. I know I will.

I have just bought a copy of your CD ‘Geordie Roots’ and really enjoyed it.
I'm interested in local traditional songs and tunes. I normally don’t listen to much jazz but I am fascinated by your treatment of the Geordie ‘standards’.
I particularly liked your ‘Not Much Left’ and would appreciate your permission for us to do it, albeit arranged slightly differently for two guitars and an accordion. We are a band of three playing at folk clubs and charity gigs.

The CD is smashing - well worth pestering Steve to get it done. It has a lovely close-up acoustic sound that you seldom hear anymore. Your guitar introduction to Rosetta reminded me of one of the unsung heroes, Carmen Mastren and in other places George Van Eps came to mind. Steve sounds very much like mid-30's Coleman Hawkins and the recording captures the breathiness very well.

Comments:Re. 'Canny Tyneside' CD by The Blaydon Aces
Dear Roly, I was pleasantly surprised to receive your CD 'Canny Tyneside', courtesy my friend David Bates. The traditional Geordie songs were very nice and certainly lulled me back to 'The Fox and Hounds', 'The Three Bulls Heads', 'The Bonnie Lad', and 'The Blackbird' (that one in Ponteland). Not that traditional songs were sung there, but my then-girlfriend’s family were all musical and would sing those, and other folk songs. Anyway, this time I could actually understand the lyrics thanks to your mellow (and lightly jazzy) voice!!! I was also impressed with the new traditional-style songs as well. You sort of remind me of the Geordie version of The Corries (that's a compliment!) -- well, half the version since you are solo.
Ah'm gannin hyem noo, Guy

PS. Further message received 30/5/2008 - "Damn you both!!!! I’ve had “Blaydon Races” -- especially the last eight bars -- continously racing through my mind ever since I listened to Roly’s CD last week !!!!!! “The gift that keeps on giving.”

Comments:"I am really thrilled with the Gypsy Jazz CD, and as I mentioned on the 'phone to you, so is everyone around me! There isn't a single track which I don't thoroughly enjoy listening to, some are already favourites, so I suppose they come higher on the list. Anything to do with Django is so magical, and I was very interested in the Kahn/Donaldson number. I think you're all very talented, extremely professional. The day your first CD arrived, it was a bit of a "down" day for all sorts of reasons, and within seconds, there I was, cleaning the bedroom, doing a bit of arthritic jive etc."

Comments:Re. John Hallam concert at Blaydon Jazz Club - 20/10/05
Hi Roly, I would have to admit to being slightly biased, but I thought the session was absolutely superb! I can't remember John playing better, backed by your super quartet. I think the audience would have given John the freedom of the North East. It is great for me to see him getting the recognition he deserves. Thanks for bringing him to the attention of a wider audience. Best of luck with the club.

Comments:Dear Roly, I want to let you know how much my family and I enjoyed the Blaydon Aces concert on Saturday evening. It was a surprise treat for my mother, who has both of your local dialect song albums. She was really surprised and totally delighted by the marvellous evening, as were everyone in our party, even the Scouser who had no idea what most of the songs were about! Thanks for sending details of the concert to Doncaster - without them I wouldn't have known a thing about it. The evening was so enjoyable I was surprised to hear that it was your first concert of local dialect songs. I hope that there will be many more. All the best and, once again, thanks very much. Comments: Roly - your CD 'Stairway to the Stars' arrived and what a treat. Small combo jazz at it's best, from four talented musicians. Each track a delight and much credit also to the recording engineer. Hard to believe it is a live, club recording session. Keep an ear to Jazz Record Requests on BBC Radio 3. I have asked for a track to be played. You deserve a larger audience! Regards, Russell

In particular, Bill plays an absolute blinder on Mr Gentle & Mr Cool. Also very impressed with Gypsy Jazz, although I may have to stop listening to it when I'm biking to work. There's been more than one occasion on sunny mornings when I've been tempted to ride around the Royal Palace a couple of times while you finish "Pennies from Heaven"... Gan canny!

Comments:Dear John & Bill I am informed the song ‘Flower among them all’ was probably written in the 1720s (time of the Jacobean rebellion) either by Sir John Fenwick or, perhaps, one of his pipers. The flower may allude to a candidate up for election in a ‘rotten’ borough around that time. It may be the full story or meaning will never be known now. My thanks to Johnny Handle for helping with this info. Best wishes. Roly

Comments:It must be twenty years ago, or more, when we came across Owen Brannigan’s famous Songs of the Tyne. We loved the whole thing – words and music and interpretation and all the vigorous grandeur of it. But we’ve always felt there’s a subtler, gentler, sadder side to these songs, and a wittier one, too, that didn’t quite find it’s place. Now we have the CD that really satisfies us. It has the wit; it also has that more haunting, delicate side we’ve never found before in a collection of Tyneside songs. What is it? It’s Canny Tyneside, by Roly Veitch and The Blaydon Aces. This is the definitive version you’ve been looking for too – buy it!

Comments:Very thoughtful interpretation on the album, which endows the songs with much more character than is often heard when they're played. Roly's done a great job in getting the songs to work for him. The riff which underpins "Blaydon Races" works better than any other arrangement I've heard of it, and "Water of Tyne" is given a typically Roly-esque mellowness by a wonderful vocal performance and a chord structure, which is rather more complex than the average folk performance of this piece, and has the power make the hairs on your arms stand up. Jolly well done!

Comments:Roly... Always a pleasure to hear your guitar playing, jazz or whatever you do. Bought your 'Canny Tyneside Album' from you last night at the 'fell cricket club' and played it to the whole family this morning, we love it and proud of your being proud to be a Geordie. Surely, you need some media publicity with this one. A point of interest, I have a friend who used to operate an international teledata call centre. He told me that, the Northeast England, particular Geordie accent was recognised as the most affable / responsive telephone voice and they always gave preference to employing personnel with the Geordie accent. Just a mention… To commend all the popular Geordie entertainers who regardless of their fame, are still rooted and proud of their origin'.
